The Dr has been accompanied by countless companions over the years and inevitably finds his way into trouble and then saves the day. Created by Sydney Newman, C.E. Webber, and Donald Wilson, it is a show that has stood the test of time unlike so many others. Its original run went from 1963-1989 with one unsuccessful film in 1996 but rediscovered its television legs in 2005 when Russell T Davies relaunched the show and it has been running strong ever since. Doctor Who has even inspired several spinoff shows including Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures.
Over the years, the Doctor has been played by twelve different actors, a feat made possible by a Time Lord trick for cheating death. If he is near death, he is able to regenerate his body into a new one. William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davidson, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, and Matt Smith have all, in that order, played the Doctor over the past fifty years. The Doctor’s Companions have been played by a myriad of actors over the years, some of whom have made returns to the show for episodes even after their official tenure has ended. Currently, Clara Oswin, played by Jenna Louise Coleman is the Doctor’s Companion. She is a mystery that the Doctor just can’t quite figure out.
Many elements of Doctor Who have become iconic over the years. The TARDIS is disguised as blue police box (once common in England) and it is bigger on the inside. (Everyone says it.) People everywhere know the sound she makes as she takes off and lands. (If you ever want to find a Whovian, just play it and they will come running.) Despite getting a few makeovers over the years, his sonic screwdriver is equally iconic. Some of the Doctor’s villains over the past fifty years are equally recognizable and have made repeat appearances such as the Daleks, the Cybermen, the Master, and most recently: the Weeping Angels.
Doctor Who is more than just a sci-fi show. It is a show about friendships and adventure, all while frequently running for your life.
