22 Dog Shirts for the Dog Days of Summer
There’s no doubting it. The Dog Days of Summer have arrived early. Not too much after the turning of the season on June 20th, most of the country experienced some pretty intense heatwaves. For those of us (like me) who usually can’t get into a pool until it’s not ice cold, that means we’re only dipping our feet in until about mid-July. But as early as last week I found myself swimming laps. And the water was already warm enough for me to dive right in.
It feels like the dog days of summer are already here. That’s an old expression that I never really knew the meaning behind. But thanks to the days of the Internet, I was able to look it up. No, it doesn’t mean that it’s so hot, dogs lay motionlessly on the ground, panting. It actually has to do with the stars.
The dog days of summer are when the bright star, Sirius, also known as the Dog Star, rises at the same time as the sun. This could begin anytime from early July to the middle of August. And from there, it lasts about a month. This was the time of year that the the ancient civilizations like the Greeks and Romans thought not only that it would be the hottest time of year, but a time that terrible catastrophes could strike. I’m OK with just the first part.
But it is funny how the expression has become related to man’s best friend. So, to keep with that tradition, I’ve dug up (like a buried bone) some dog shirts. Some of them summer themed. Cats may rule the internet but dogs rule the summer. Enjoy!
