Interview: Jose Real AKA Fuacka
Today’s interview features crazy-talented designer Jose Real who you’ll probably know simply as Fuacka. His art is inspired by television, movies, comic books, cartoons and videos games (the best things in life!) We’ve featured a number of his designs in our recent Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and Adventure Time t-shirt lists. It seemed like every time I was researching designs for specific themes, there would be at least one killer design of his in the mix. So, I just had to reach out for an interview, and here it is.
How would you introduce yourself and your art to people who may not familiar with you?
Just another fan doing what he loves most: having fun drawing what I like and meanwhile trying to improve my skills.
Just what does Fuacka mean?
What does fuacka mean? Nothing, it’s some kind of onomatopoeia for a biff or something that I use as XBox Live ID, and while playing COD I saw that people find it funny.
How did you get started designing t-shirts?
I quit from my job (not related to Design or Illustration) and already knew about Threadless and their awesome designs so I tried to give my best dedicating full-time on tee designing. Later I heard about daily-tee sites and because I’m a huge fan thought that it would be a great field to work in.
What inspires your work?
Comic-books, cartoons, video games, TV shows, movies, advertising… Internet!
Can you give us any insight into your creative process?
It’s always changing, but most of the time it starts with a character that I want to draw and from there it’s a little chaotic. I’m awful with planning and the final result rarely looks like the sketch.
Which is your favorite design of your own?
Which has been your most successful design to-date?
“Cooking Time“, was sold on three different daily-tee sites with great sales and it’s my best-seller at RedBubble and Society6.
Who are some of your favorite artists?
My favorite comic-book artists ever are: Jack Kirby, Mike Mignola, Eduardo Risso, Adam Hughes, Bill Sienkiewicz, John Romita Jr., Chris Bachallo… the list is countless!
But if we are talking about classic artists: Alphons Mucha, Gustav Klimt, Katsushika Hokusai, Leonardo Da Vinci…
What are some of your interests outside of art?
Basically fandoming: read comic-books, play video-games, watch TV and movies… and music, I LOVE EVERY KIND OF MUSIC! (except from mainstream pop singers and all that sh*t) I used to sing on a metal band formed with some good friends.
What is your all time favorite video game?
I can’t decide so… GTA San Andreas and Ocarina Of Time, I love sandbox type games and Ocarina Of Time was the first 3d game on using sandbox mechanics succesfuly and GTASA it’s the best sandbox ever.
What are your vices?
Smoking, fast-food (I love you, why you’re making me fat???) and video games because it makes me waste tons of time.
Hypothetical dinner party, you and any two people, dead or alive, who do you choose?
Don’t know… Someone funny and smart I suppose…. Groucho Marx and Bill Murray! This would be a great dinner party.
Are you currently working on anything we should keep an eye out for?
My wish it’s to publish a comic-book, but still I have to improve my drawing skills even more.
Thanks for the interview Jose, really appreciate your time, fingers crossed we’ll see a comic book from you in the not too distant future – and plenty of awesome new tee designs in the mean time!
