Ahoy, Matey! Here’s a Booty of 18 Pirate Shirts!
Pirates were terrible, terrible people. They did horrible things to innocent folks. I’m talking beyond walking the plank. For example, they used to cut of people’s tongue’s and feed them to them. But yet, we have a romantic image of these guys as swashbuckling mercenaries who were just out searching for buried treasure.
Even before Johnny Depp starred in endless Pirates of the Caribbean movies, pirates have always had a cool image. Kids loved to dress up like them at Halloween. Captain Hook may have been threatening, but in the end, he was not match for Peter Pan and the Lost Boys. And every kid who saw The Goonies dreamed of uncovering a pirate ship in their home town. Heck, there was even a lighthearted opera made about pirates (The Pirates of Penzance).
The pirate television series, Black Sails (produced by Michael Bay) is on it’s fourth and final season. And every September we have talk like a pirate day. You can even change some settings on social media devices like Facebook to speak in pirate speak.
When it comes down to it, I think the appeal of pirates is their look and style. Granted, none of us would want to have a wooden leg or a hook hand (outside of Buster on Arrested Development). But those cool boots and vests and fun hats! For some New Romantics in the 1980s, that look was all the rage (think Adam Ant). And the skull and crossbone image works on everybody from bikers to Goths.
That’s why I can see that despite their horrible actions, the mythology of pirates has lasted to this day and age.
So yo ho, yo ho, if it’s a pirate’s life for you, but you can’t hoist the Jolly Roger, then throw on these shirts to show off your proud pirate-hood!
