36 Dalek Shirts to Exterminate! Annihilate! Destroy!
When I think of my favorite killing machines, and I often do, the mechanical monsters that rise to the top of the list are Doctor Who’s most fearsome foes: The Daleks. These evil salt and pepper shaker looking robots have been terrifying children (and many adults) for over 50 years now. Their unforgettable battle cry of “Exterminate!” has assaulted all thirteen Doctors, and then some.
The Daleks stormed into existence in the first series of Doctor Who, in an episode simply called, The Daleks. They almost instantly became a phenomenon. Within a year, there were two spin-off movies highlighting the Daleks: Dr. Who and the Daleks, as well as The Dalek Invasion of Earth. These were the non-cannon Peter Cushing Doctor Who movies. And though they were terrible, they weren’t bad enough to annihilate the Daleks’ popularity.
Since then, they’ve popped up to face each Doctor if not once, then multiple times. And they even showed up in the Doctor Who Parody with Rowan Atkinson, The Curse of Fatal Death. Peter Capaldi takes them on in the new season opener. And they had a little cameo in the Batman Lego Movie as the “British Robots” (“Ask your nerd friends.”).
More than 50 years later, these killing machines are more popular than ever. And though we all may have our favorite Doctor, I think most Doctor Who fans can agree the Daleks are their favorite villains. As a matter of fact, my first ever Doctor Who shirt was of a Dalek, not a Doctor. There are lots of fun Doctor Who shirts out there, but let’s hear it for the bad boys.
I’ve dug up an army of Dalek shirts. Resistance is futile.
